Understanding the 5 Pin Chinese CDI

When it comes to Chinese mini bikes, ATVs, and Go Karts, the most common ignition system used is the 5 pin Chinese CDI. This system utilizes an ignition coil, a capacitor discharge ignition (CDI), and a spark plug all connected by wiring harnesses. In order to troubleshoot and repair any problem with your Chinese 5 pin CDI, it's important to understand how this system works.

What is a 5 Pin Chinese CDI?

The 5 pin Chinese CDI is an ignition system that consists of an ignition coil, capacitor discharge ignition (CDI), and spark plug all wired to a set of five pins. The five pins are connected to two sets of two wires for the ignition coil and one wire for the spark plug. The CDI acts as a switch that controls the flow of electricity from the battery to the ignition coil. When the engine speed increases, the CDI will open and allow more electricity to flow to the ignition coil which results in a stronger spark.

Pin Configuration of a 5 Pin CDI

The 5 pin Chinese CDI has a specific pin configuration. In order to understand how this system works, it’s important to know the pin configurations. The pins are labeled from left to right, starting with GND. The first two pins are the ground pins, also known as the negative terminal. They are labeled GND and are connected to the negative side of the battery. The next two pins are for the primary winding of the ignition coil. They are labeled P1 and P2. P1 is connected to the positive terminal of the battery and the P2 is connected to the negative terminal. The last pin is for the spark plug. This pin is labeled SP and is connected to the spark plug.

Wiring Diagram for a 5 Pin CDI

In order to properly install and use a 5 pin Chinese CDI, a wiring diagram is necessary. The wiring diagram shows the connection between the components. Starting at the top, there is the CDI connected to the negative side of the battery. From there, the ignition coil is connected to the CDI, P1 and P2 pins, and the spark plug is connected to the SP pin.

Testing a 5 Pin CDI

Testing a 5 pin Chinese CDI is relatively straightforward. To test the CDI, simply connect the positive side of a 12-volt battery to the P1 pin and the negative side of the battery to the P2 pin. Then, connect the negative lead of an ohmmeter to the GND pin and the positive lead of the ohmmeter to the SP pin. If the ohmmeter reads continuity, then the CDI is functioning correctly. If not, then the CDI needs to be replaced.

Symptoms of a Bad CDI

If the 5 pin Chinese CDI is malfunctioning, there are certain signs and symptoms that can indicate a problem. These signs include difficult or no starting, engine misfiring, irregular idling, and lack of power. If any of these symptoms are present, then the CDI should be tested or replaced.

Using a 6 Pin CDI on a 5 Pin System

While it is possible to use a 6 pin CDI on a 5 pin system, it is not recommended. The 6 pin CDI has six pins instead of five, so the wiring diagram and installation process are slightly different. Furthermore, the 6 pin CDI may not be compatible with the 5 pin system. Therefore, it is best to use a 5 pin CDI on a 5 pin system.

Buying a Chinese 5 Pin CDI

When it comes to buying a Chinese 5 pin CDI, there are several options available online. Many websites specialize in selling Chinese 5 pin CDI parts and accessories. It is important to make sure that the part is compatible with your bike or vehicle before purchasing. Additionally, some websites offer free shipping on orders over a certain amount.

AC vs DC CDI

When it comes to choosing between an AC and DC CDI, there are a few things to consider. AC CDIs are generally cheaper and easier to find than DC CDIs. However, AC CDIs are not as efficient and reliable as DC CDIs. Furthermore, AC CDIs require more maintenance and have shorter lifespans than DC CDIs. Therefore, it is best to opt for a DC CDI when possible.

Replacing a CDI with a Different Brand

It is possible to replace a Chinese 5 pin CDI with a different brand. However, it is important to ensure that the new CDI is compatible with the existing wiring and ignition system. Additionally, the replacement must be done carefully and with the utmost attention to detail in order to ensure a successful installation. Lastly, it is important to read the manufacturer’s instructions before attempting any type of CDI replacement.
